The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST has donated a Vehicle to the KNUST Police Station to help facilitate their operations. Presenting the keys to the Deputy Regional Commander of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police Kwasi Duku, Professor Willaim Otoo Ellis, the Vice-Chancellor gave a background of the donation. He said the University wrote to corporate organizations to donate vehicles to support the University in its operations. Vodafone kindly donated a refurbished vehicle to KNUST.
However with seventy percent (70%) of students and staff staying outside Campus it poses a lot of challenges to the University. The University Security Services is also limited in its operations in areas beyond their jurisdiction, and when the KNUST Police Station is called upon, they are not able to assist the University because they are immobile and have inadequate security logistics.
Prof. Ellis noted that the university management therefore thought it wise to hand over the vehicle donated by Vodafone to the KNUST operations to help in their operations especially with night patrols in and around the University.
The Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, ACP. Kwasi DUKU said contemporary policing requires the support of all and called for assistance to help the police execute their mandate.
He noted that plans are underway for the KNUST Police Station to be elevated to the status of a District Police Station, however due to inadequate accommodation for staff and logistics, the plan has remained on the drawing board for a long time. He therefore used the occasion to appeal to the University and the general public to assist the Ghana Police Service to serve the public well.
